The 3-Layer Data Approach for Perfecting Your Outdoor Prep
You’ve probably used some apps for your mountain or outdoor activities, but have you found one that really offers high-quality data? At Whympr, we’ve taken a different approach, focusing on the quality and variety of the information we provide. Just like you layer up with clothes in winter to stay warm, we've structured our data in three layers to ensure you have the best experience when preparing for your outdoor adventures. Here's what those three "data" layers are.
Layer 1: Professional Topos
The first layer is our "Topo Pros": detailed descriptions of hiking, snowshoeing, ski touring, and climbing routes created by professional authors and editors. We work with them to digitize their content, which is available for purchase individually or as a bundle. You can find topos from well-known experts like François Burnier (Vamos), Gilles Brunot (Ekiproc), and many more. A portion of the revenue is shared with the authors and editors, following a model similar to book distribution. Learn more about Topo Pros.

Layer 2: Qualified Sources
The second layer is made up of data from qualified sources: we’ve gathered over 100,000 points of interest and routes from sources like tourist offices, Camptocamp, and Skitour. While some descriptions come from the community, they are moderated by these trusted platforms. Each route clearly shows its source and provides a link to the original information, ensuring you have access to reliable and qualified data.

Layer 3: Community Feedback
The third layer consists of the feedback and photos shared by the Whympr user community. These fresh insights give you an idea of the current conditions on the ground. You can find them in three places within Whympr:
- On the community wall
- In recent outings on the map
- In the "post" section of the route description screens, if a post is linked to a route in our database
With the "recent outings" option on the map, only outings from the last 10 days are displayed, so you can see the most up-to-date conditions to help with your outing preparation.

What data is used to suggest routes to you?
The routes suggested in our database come from the Topo Pro (layer 1) and qualified data (layer 2). You can find them either on the map or by using the app's search bar.
Community data, on the other hand, is not considered as routes but rather as information (photos, tracks) and subjective feedback from users. These community contributions are not included in our database. Therefore, a route created by a user will appear on the wall but will not show up in your search results.
In summary,
At Whympr, each layer of data plays a role in your preparation. Our goal is to provide you with relevant and updated information so that you can head to the mountains—and beyond—with greater peace of mind.
