So... A Year Without FATMAP?

One Year After FATMAP Closed: A Look Back

Last year’s FAT news came on October 1st, 2024: FATMAP bid farewell. It left a small void in the outdoor world. But we quickly saw that the community adapted and found other ways to plan winter adventures. At Whympr, we witnessed huge enthusiasm for our app -it was amazing. Thank you! Here’s a quick look back one year after FATMAP’s closure.

Why FATMAP Disappeared… and Why It’s Not the End of the World

FATMAP, the app created by British entrepreneur Misha Gopaul, was absorbed by the American giant Strava. The San Francisco-based company wanted to integrate mapping features directly into its platform and reach a wider audience.

However, according to the community’s feedback, communication around this transition was fairly limited, leaving some FATMAP users a little lost and searching for alternatives.

Strava’s Price Was Also Part of the Debate…Today (October 2025), Strava subscribers pay between €59.99 and €139.99 per year (for those on the Strava + Runna bundle), compared to €29.99 for FATMAP: an increase of 100% to 366%, depending on the plan.

Many users had to find a new app to plan their mountain outings. Back then, Whympr offered the option to export old routes. Over the following weeks, Whympr naturally became the outdoor app to try.

This winter, don’t hesitate to download Whympr for your ski touring trips!

One Year Later: Whympr 2.0

In just one year, Whympr has evolved significantly. New features have been added, mapping has been improved, the user community has grown stronger, and the app has become smoother and more intuitive. Today, Whympr offers an even more complete experience for planning and enjoying your outdoor adventures.

What’s Coming Next

We’ve already revamped the 3D engine to make it even easier to view your tracks, and the global satellite map has been updated. We also launched Fly Over, a tool that lets you “fly over” your routes in 3D, as if you were really there.

And that’s not all: big updates are coming before the winter season, with the goal of bringing us on par with FATMAP in terms of mapping.

Conclusion

FATMAP may be gone, but the passion for the outdoors remains stronger than ever. Whympr is here to help you continue planning and sharing your adventures.

We’re ready for this winter. Are you?
